The Wells College softball team fell in both games of a doubleheader against non-conference opponent SUNY Canton on Monday, April 17 at the Wells Turf Field. Canton took the opening game 6-2, and then the Roos rallied from a last-inning deficit and won 12-8 in the second game of the day.
Wells is 5-15 on the year and Canton improved to 10-7. The Express returns to conference play Thursday, April 20 with a home doubleheader against Penn College beginning at 4:30 p.m.
SUNY Canton 6, Wells 2
The Wells lineup banged out nine hits but pushed two runs across in the opening game. Wells left 12 runners on base in the game, including the bases loaded in the first and two runners on in the second and third. Naomi Kubo, Sydney Cullen, Baylee Pearce, and Jessica Conover had two hits each.
Wells scored a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI double by Autumn McLain and another run in the sixth on a bases-loaded single by Pearce.
Jessica Conover pitched all seven innings with one strikeout and three walks.
SUNY Canton 12, Wells 8
The Roos trailed 6-2 going to the top of the seventh but scored 10 runs in the seventh and went on to win the second game of the day.
Canton scored twice in the fifth, but Wells answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning on five-straight hits. Kubo led off the inning with a solo home run. Pearce had a two-run single to score Dallia Rorick and Sydney Cullen.
The Roos scored 10 times in the seventh on six hits. A three-run double was the big hit in the inning for Canton. Wells scored twice in the bottom of the seventh and brought the tying-run to the plate before the rally ended.
Lizzie Monnat had three hits for Wells. Pearce had two hits and four RBIs. Kubo had two hits, two RBIs, and scored three times.
