The Wells College women's volleyball team fell in a close straight-sets match against Oswego State on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at the Schwartz Athletic Center in Aurora, N.Y. Set scores were 25-20, 25-23, 25-21 in favor of the Lakers.
Wells led in the middle portions of the first two sets before Oswego State rallied to claim both sets.
The Express jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set before Oswego State fought back. The set was tied six times, including at 19-19, but Oswego State ran off six of the final seven points of the opening set.
Wells led 21-15 in the late stages of the second set, but the Lakers came back to take it 25-23.
The Lakers were most efficient in the third set with 15 kills and a .231 hitting percentage to take it 25-21.
Wells hit .107 in the match with 36 kills and 24 errors. Oswego State hit .135 with 36 kills and 21 errors. The Lakers had 10 team blocks and Wells blocked seven Oswego State attempts.
Rachel Anderson had 10 kills for Wells with three kills in each of the first two sets and four in the third set. Lakshmi Martin had eight kills and Jazzmyne Williams had seven. Jordan Stoops assisted 17 times and Lorissa Parks had 14 assists.
It was a late-season non-league tune-up for both sides, as they have both qualified for their upcoming conference playoffs next week. Wells will host a North Eastern Athletic Conference quarterfinal match against Keuka College and Oswego State will visit Brockport in a SUNY Athletic Conference quarterfinal. Both matches are on Tuesday, Oct. 30.
Oswego State is 17-12 on the year and Wells is 15-11.
Wells closes its regular season Saturday, Oct. 27 with a 2 p.m. home match against Cazenovia College. The Express will recognize senior Amanda Springer and exchange student Nanako Otsuka prior to the start of the match.
